Yoga with Helen Davidson Tapper

Come join us for a warm week of yoga in Mexico. Our week together will be a slow and mindful exploration of the inner world, and of the beautiful Caribbean coast.

Daily yoga, meditation and breathwork classes will the our primary vehicle, bringing us to a deeper and more authentic experience of Self. The intention of the week is to become more familiar and practiced with living in a state of presence, and love. As the process deepens, we find that we are no longer doing yoga, but that the inherently transformational asana are working their magic on us. Journaling, drawing, writing, and painting insights is encouraged, and we will leave time for creative expression.

Why should I practice breathing?  The body breathes on its own.  I have a busy life.  Why should I add this to my list of things to do? … and, by the way, what is pranayama?

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning to restrain, build and channel (yama) the life force (prana).   In the 8 limbed path of yoga, pranayama is the 4th, following the practice of asana, the poses.

I fell in love with pranayama during a yoga teaching training course.  At first I didn’t understand the value of a practice focused solely on breathing, assuming that I got this while practicing asana and while watching the breath during meditation.  Little did I know that deliberate, conscious breathwork.

I have always loved to stretch, and studied dance and movement from the time I was a child.  While in college I met my first yoga teacher, a man in his 80’s who taught me that “I am only as old as my spine”.  He sent me to the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, where I lived after college for 6 months, working in the kitchen and practicing meditation and yoga.  In the twenty years since, I have trained as a yoga teacher, massage therapist, and Body Mind Centering practitioner, and have received a M.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy.  My teaching style is heavily influenced by Buddhist meditation, as well as interest in Continuum and authentic movement.  I have been especially inspired by Angela Farmer, Vanda Scaravelli, Donna Fahri, Lillah Schwartz, and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.

Discovering the union existing right Now, and how we humans constantly interfere with and cloud this deep knowing, is the central focus of my personal and professional work.
